Commercial development close to the busy Houston Street bridge did not allow space for construction of direct stairway access to the level of the River Walk. The solution was to cantilever a walkway with a decorative cast stone railing above the River Walk behind existing buildings on the west. A half block north of a narrow opening to Houston Street beside the bridge there was room for a stairway to be excavated and open beside the River Walk below.
Although the opening has since been sealed for construction of a hotel on the site, the entryway retains its cast iron sign, one of several original ones remaining in the style designed by Hugman.
